Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors

The Watchful Order is both a Guild and a Faction.

Represented by Ulkoria Stonemarrow.

Arcane spellcasters living in the city are required by law to register with the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors, so that they can be called on to defend the city with their magic in times of need.

All wizards and sorcerers are required to establish membership with the guild if they intend to call Waterdeep home, and only guild members are exempt from rules against the use of magic outside of private residences.

The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors

Expect to be questioned at the gate, or when you register with a magister, regarding your ability to cast arcane magic. Wizards, sorcerers, and other arcane spellcasters who intend to stay in Waterdeep for any length of time are required to register with the city, and will be strongly encouraged to join the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors, headed by the Blackstaff.

Members of the Watchful Order are expected to render service to the city when called upon, acting as temporary members of the City Watch or City Guard. Their expertise often helps investigators determine whether magic was used to commit a crime in the city. Members can also expect to be tapped for assistance during and after fires, natural events that cause multiple casualties, or other nonmagical disasters.

Members of the Watchful Order form a more or less sociable association in the city, working together to keep an eye on any spellcasters who opt not to join their guild. Any havoc caused by a spellcaster in Waterdeep risks drawing the wrath of the Lords of Waterdeep - so it behooves the Watchful Order to watch all its members.

The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors is the guild of wizards and sorcerers for the city of Waterdeep. However, while technically a guild, the Watchful Order functions primarily as a mage academy. The Watchful Order also polices the use of magic within Waterdeep, encouraging wizards to use magic wisely.

The Order provides many services to its members, including a venue for trading spell components and magical items. The Order serves Waterdeep by providing spell wards for wealthy inhabitants and fire fighting through the use of water elementals.

The Order also provids many services to the city. Members can earn extra money serving as a fire guard, firefighter, or spell guard. A fire guard is hired to stand watch over a building and squelch any fires that may start as well as alert the firefighters. A firefighter is just that - they are summoned to put out fires with magic. A spell guard serves as a bodyguard to counter magical attacks. Pay was typically 5, 10, and 10 gold pieces per night/day, respectively.

The Tower Library

The Tower Library is the name used by members of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors to refer to the small library in their guild hall - The Tower of the Order, on the Street of Bells in Castle Ward.

Like most of the Hall, it is only accessible to members of the guild. The contents of this library are officially a guild secret, but it is generally believed to hold a small, low-level, mundane collection of spells in addition to a good assortment of general reference works on the magickal arts.

The real significance of the library's small spell collection is that any member of the guild can order single-spell scrolls of any of the spells on the list from the guild.
